The objective of this thesis is to measure the misalignment of the Indonesian real exchange rate in the period leading to the currency crisis of 1997. This thesis follows the theoretical hypothesis that when the real exchange rate of a country is overvalued, a currency crisis will be the most likely consequence. To perform the empirical test in this thesis, quaterly data (covering the period from the first quarter of 1982 to the fourth quarter of 1998) is used, obtained from the International Financial Statistics (IFS) as produced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Three methods are used to measure exchange rate misalignment. These are the trade-equation approach, the structural general-equilibrium approach, and the reduced-form general-equilibrium approach.
